CU Quants' student-run, real-money trading fund focused on performance, innovation, and collaboration
The CU Quants Fund is a real-money, student-run quantitative trading fund at CU Boulder. Our core objective is to outperform the S&P 500 while giving upperclassmen and graduate students hands-on experience in live markets. The fund is a specialized division within CU Quants — open only to selected members — and operates independently from our general club meetings.
Modeled after modern proprietary trading firms, the fund is organized into four tightly integrated teams:
Trading – Monitors and improves live strategies, adjusts configurations, and develops new trading ideas.
Research – Supports Trading and Risk with advanced research, data analysis, and ML/SL-based model development.
Engineering – Develops all of our internal tools and infrastructure, including trading systems, data pipelines, and dashboards.
Risk Management – Optimizes capital allocation and mitigates risk by positioning bids/asks and managing portfolio exposure.
The fund currently focuses on market making across a variety of markets, using strategies built entirely in-house. Our approach emphasizes:
Optimization-based risk and capital allocation
Machine learning and statistical modeling for price prediction and market signals
Internally developed tools for execution, monitoring, and research
We are actively researching and testing additional strategies beyond market making.
The fund uses a flat leadership structure. Each of the four teams is led by a Head (e.g., Head of Research), and all Heads report directly to the CU Quants Executive Board. This model promotes accountability and collaboration without centralized control.
We began trading in May and have achieved an annualized return of 28.40% to date — a reflection of the fund’s collaborative, data-driven, and disciplined approach.
All CU Boulder students are welcome to attend CU Quants general meetings. However, fund membership is selective. Each team posts openings as needed. The application process includes:
Initial application submission
A brief online assessment (OA)
In-person technical and behavioral interview
Each team has between 5–15 members and determines its own recruiting needs.

Above all, we do this because it’s fun. Quantitative finance is hard to tackle alone — CU Quants is a space where passionate, curious students work together to solve difficult problems, share ideas, and build real systems that interact with real markets.
Fund teams meet twice a week to plan, build, and collaborate.
